Three days ago, on June 5, 2012, astronomy enthusiasts from around the globe, prepared for and witnessed the transit of Venus.
A transit of Venus occurs when Venus passes directly between the sun and earth. This alignment is rare, coming in pairs that are eight years apart but separated by over a century.
Of all the people who ever lived, think about how much more meaningful this event is to us who have the technology to anticipate, track and observe in high definition this potentially once in a lifetime opportunity!
Transit of Venus pairs since the invention of the telescope:
- 1631 (not witnessed) & 1639
- 1761 & 1769
- 1874 & 1882
- 2004 & 2012
The next one will occur in 2117.
Now, I do not know this for certain, but, my guess would be that of all the people who refused to miss the opportunity of Venus, far less people took advantage of an even greater opportunity available this week…accepting Christ as Lord!
Do you know that God loves you and desires a relationship with you? Christ died for our sins so that we could enjoy eternity with Him. He could not bear the thought of eternity apart from you so he purchased you back to God through a tortured and violent death on a wooden cross, erected in Judea, some two thousand years ago.
If you took advantage of the temporal, momentary and insignificant transit of Venus, don’t neglect the weightier, everlasting and most significant opportunity of life — accepting Jesus as Lord and Saviour.
Anyone who missed Venus missed it for good. Aren’t you thankful God’s grace remains available?
The Bible says “Today is the acceptable day of salvation.”
What a great time to be alive!
Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades?
Can you loosen Orion’s belt?
Can you bring forth the constellations in their seasons
or lead out the Bear with its cubs?
Do you know the laws of the heavens?
