I read a blog post yesterday that attacked the historicity of Jesus of Nazareth.

What is utterly shocking about that is the fact that Jesus of Nazareth is the single MOST HISTORICALLY RELIABLE PERSON in human history.  I will demonstrate that beyond a shadow of a doubt in a forthcoming post regarding how historical reliability is established.  Today however, I just wanted to take the time to examine and rebut their overall point and why it is an example of fallacious reasoning.

ACCUSATION #1:  Jesus’ miracles lacked the originality necessary to actually be the Son of God.

I’m sorry, but that is just flat out incorrect.   There were two classifications of miracles in Judaism:

1.)  The kind anyone can do by empowerment from God

2.)  Messianic Miracles – Miracles only Messiah would be able to perform

Among the Messianic Miracles, there were three major ones which Jesus demonstrated:

A.  Cleansing lepers

B.  Restoring sight to those born blind

C.  Casting out a dumb demon

While prophets could perform miracles in Judaism, the rabbis knew that when Messiah came upon the world scene, there would be three major miracles that only Messiah would be able to perform, and only Jesus of Nazareth did, beginning in Matthew Chapter 12!  It was also precisely these three miracles that Jesus expected the Jewish Leadership to also recognize as the authentication of His claims and teachings.

But even if Jesus’ miracles were not original, does that alone disqualify him from being Messiah or even a real human being?  Jesus of Nazareth fulfilled every one (hundreds and hundreds), of Old Testament prophecies concerning his first coming, many of which would have been beyond his control such as where he was born (Micah 5:2) and the exact amount of silver for which he’d be betrayed (Zechariah 11:12-13).

ACCUSATION #2:  Jesus could not be the Son of God because others also made this claim.

In essence, what this person is arguing is the ridiculous notion that Jesus cannot be the Son of God because there have been false Messiah’s throughout history.

That is exactly like stating that a country cannot have real legal tender because counterfeits exist.

The counterfeit does not and will not ever disqualify the legitimate!
