This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him; Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created. Genesis 5:1-2
One of the things that becomes startlingly apparent as you begin to read the Bible is the realization that the Bible is, far from just a collection of 66 books written by 40 authors over thousands of years, is actually an integrated message system from outside our time domain. What I mean by that is, the Bible lays out the future in advance so that when the events take place, we will know that the Bible must have been inspired by God. This is also called prophecy.
We see God declaring this very thing in the 42nd Chapter of Isaiah:
See, the former things have taken place,
and new things I declare;
before they spring into being
I announce them to you.” (Isaiah 42:9 NIV84)
The Bible stands alone in this regard as no other book makes such claims. Once we discover that the message in the Bible was communicated by God we soon begin to notice that every detail, every name, color, and number is significant and divinely engineered from outside of time for a purpose. The Bible doesn’t just claim Divine Authorship; it is communicated in a way that disqualifies any other means of transmission.
This is evident in no better place than a mere five chapters into the Bible which is Genesis Chapter 5. Genesis Chapter 5 is the type of chapter that most folks just turn past. The reason is that Genesis 5 is one of many places that includes a listing of genealogical information which seems to only amount to a bunch of unpronounceable names and ages. Even gifted Bible expositors generally skip past the reading of genealogies during corporate meetings, preferring instead to pick back up with the plot text.
However, if we take a closer look, what we find is nothing short of griping.
Let’s begin with the Chapter:
Genesis 5 — Adam’s Descendants to Noah
This is the book of the generations of Adam. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God. 2 Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and named them Man when they were created. 3 When Adam had lived 130 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth. 4 The days of Adam after he fathered Seth were 800 years; and he had other sons and daughters. 5 Thus all the days that Adam lived were 930 years, and he died.
Adam = man. He is afterall the first man
6 When Seth had lived 105 years, he fathered Enosh. 7 Seth lived after he fathered Enosh 807 years and had other sons and daughters. 8 Thus all the days of Seth were 912 years, and he died.
Seth = Appointed. Eve said, “For God hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.
9 When Enosh had lived 90 years, he fathered Kenan. 10 Enosh lived after he fathered Kenan 815 years and had other sons and daughters. 11 Thus all the days of Enosh were 905 years, and he died.
Enosh = mortal, frail, or miserable. It is from the root anash, to be incurable, used of a wound, grief, woe, sickness, or wickedness
12 When Kenan had lived 70 years, he fathered Mahalalel. 13 Kenan lived after he fathered Mahalalel 840 years and had other sons and daughters. 14 Thus all the days of Kenan were 910 years, and he died
Kenan = sorrow, dirge or elegy
15 When Mahalalel had lived 65 years, he fathered Jared. 16 Mahalalel lived after he fathered Jared 830 years and had other sons and daughters. 17 Thus all the days of Mahalalel were 895 years, and he died
Mahalalel = The Blessed God
18 When Jared had lived 162 years he fathered Enoch. 19 Jared lived after he fathered Enoch 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 20 Thus all the days of Jared were 962 years, and he died.
Jared = Shall come down
21 When Enoch had lived 65 years, he fathered Methuselah. 22 Enoch walked with God after he fathered Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23 Thus all the days of Enoch were 365 years. 24 Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him.
Enoch = teaching, or commencement.
25 When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he fathered Lamech. 26 Methuselah lived after he fathered Lamech 782 years and had other sons and daughters. 27 Thus all the days of Methuselah were 969 years, and he died.
Methuselah = His death shall bring
28 When Lamech had lived 182 years, he fathered a son 29 and called his name Noah, saying, “Out of the ground that the Lord has cursed, this one shall bring us relief[d] from our work and from the painful toil of our hands.” 30 Lamech lived after he fathered Noah 595 years and had other sons and daughters. 31 Thus all the days of Lamech were 777 years, and he died.
Lamech = Lamenting or despairing
32 After Noah was 500 years old, Noah fathered Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
Noah = comfort, as Lamech himself explains in Genesis 5:29.
Man appointed mortal sorrow. The Blessed God shall come down teaching. His death shall bring the despairing comfort.
Therefore, we find in the very first pages of the Old Testament, which is the Jewish Bible, the gospel message laid out nearly five thousand years before Christ! Are you going to suggest to me that a group of Jewish Rabbis got together thousands of years beforehand and secretly placed and embedded the Christian Gospel which they reject, into their most holy writings?
Clearly the Bible is Divinely inspired and Jesus Christ really is the Blessed God that shall come down teaching and Who’s death did bring the despairing comfort!
Have you accepted Jesus as Lord?
