Today we will be examining the first of many examples which strongly suggest a young earth from the vantage point of earth’s observable features.
We begin with Niagara Falls.
If you’ve never been to Niagara Falls, not only is it a breath-taking and worthwhile vacation destination, it is also one of the places which not only demonstrates that the earth is much younger than the 4.6 billion years ascribed by evolution theory and but also confirms the reality of Noah’s Flood as laid out in Genesis 6-8.
The above textbook shows a picture of Niagara Falls, and how Niagara Falls is eroding. All waterfalls eat away at the bank which slowly erodes the edge back. The Canadians built a concrete wall on the far side to make sure it erodes American soil instead of Canadian soil. Pretty smart, eh?
The rocks are breaking off the edge. This is obvious and uncontested. As the continuous water flows, it breaks rocks off the edge, moving the waterfall in a southerly direction. It is moving, according to the museum guides, 4.7 feet annually or nearly 5 feet every year.
Now, during the 1930’s, they diverted most of the water for hydroelectric power, so the erosion rate has cut back considerably. They can actually dry up Niagara Falls by diverting all the water if they want.
Above is the crest line showing the recession of Horseshoe Falls since 1764. 865 feet in 185 years or 4.7 feet per year.
By all estimations, Niagara Falls has only moved 7 miles.
All the textbooks agree that Niagara Falls has moved between 7 – 8 miles.
Niagara Falls is right there right now. It used to be up here, but it has moved south by 7 miles.
Therefore, If the earth is billions of years old, why has it only moved 7 miles and not moved all the way to Lake Erie by now or clear to Florida for that matter? Why is Niagara Falls right there?
Here is why:
6,000 years ago, God created the heavens and the earth.
4,400 years ago there was a Flood that destroyed the world. As the Flood water was running off, probably half of that creek washed out the first 15 minutes because they had lots of water moving through soft mud. Today, it is just a trickle and it is over solid rock so the erosion rate is pretty slow.
Therefore, the location of Niagara Falls itself stands as a testimony that earth is less than 10,000 years old.
Once again, we see how all of the empirical evidence around us harmonizes seamlessly with the Bible record.
