“preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.”  2 Timothy 4:2

Last time, we discussed the fundamental assumptions of Logic (here) and how it proves the God of the Bible since Logic is borrowed from the Christian Worldview.

The same is true with Science.

The fundamental assumption of Science is based upon the Bible.  Therefore, without Christianity, you cannot even conduct Science.

When someone says, “I believe in Science, not the Bible!,” they are stating that Science is their god in this example, yet they cannot account for the fundamental assumption of Science.

The fundamental assumption of Science is known as the Uniformity of Nature.  On a very basic level, the Uniformity of Nature (not to be confused with Uniformitarianism which states that conditions are a constant.), is the belief that the future will be like the past.  We could not perform the simplest scientific experiment if we did not expect tomorrow to be like today.  For example, when we boil water at a certain temperature and pressure, we expect it to boil at the same temperature and pressure tomorrow.  However, without a controlling influence, the skeptic has zero expectation to believe that tomorrow will be like today.

So when the unbeliever says, “Of course tomorrow will be like today because it’s always been that way in the past.  Look at all the evidence around us!,” they are in reality not answering the question, but rather postponing it.

This is called “begging the question.”

They are assuming what is to be proven in the proof.

I am not asking about the past, I am asking about the future.  So when I ask how do you know the future will be like the past, talking about the past has nothing to do with what I am asking.

They are assuming the proof in the proof.

According to the Bible however, we have a reasonable expectation for the Uniformity of Nature based on the promises of God.  For instance, Genesis 8:22 says:

While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.

Without a controlling influence, where did the “Law of Uniformity” come from?

Without a controlling influence, what is your basis for conducting science?

Without a controlling influence, what is your basis that tomorrow will be like today?

The Bible is the foundation upon which science rests.

Many unbelievers think that Christians are against science.  I do not know a single follower of Christ who is against science.  However, there is real, observable, testable and demonstrable science and then there is junk science like man-made global warming and evolution theory.

Good science does not contradict Scripture.

Scripture is the authority over science, not the other way around.  Without the Bible we have no basis to believe that science is even valid.

Unbelievers charge that valid science contradicts the Bible when the truth of the matter is, we only understand the expectations and foundational assumptions of science because of the Bible.

Science demands the truth of Scripture!
